40
fajitas,
guacamole, margaritas
and the laughter of a man turning 40

The Sound of 40
The clanking of horseshoes
The whoosh of a bad mitten birdie
And the whack of a croquet mallet
sending a ball across the lawn
Guitars and drums,
voices singing out in an off-key harmony
And the endless art of warm conversations
mulling tales often retold
Children giggling, dogs barking
Ghost stories told by firelight,
a shriek
The crackle and hiss of a small blaze fed green wood
And the long deep satisfying silence
after the party is over
In the middle of the night a garbage can clangs
then there is the gnawing and gnashing of teeth
a fat and happy raccoon
ambling away to slumber through another day
